Is Clubhouse Dead?
Today we are answering the question of Is Clubhouse Dead? For those of you who don't know - where have you been? Clubhouse was known as the "new social media app" where it is all audio. People around the world can come together in audio chat rooms and be part of the conversation live. And to top it off, it was an invite-only app. So if you had access to it, it seemed like you were a part of a secret club that no one else could get into.
Just a Trend? 📱
But, was Clubhouse a pandemic trend and that's it?
There are conflicting arguments and really only time will tell, but let's take a look...
In February of 2021, there were 9.2 million downloads. And now? Well, it’s decreased by 90% and only received around 900,000 downloads a month. And why is that? If you think about it, Clubhouse was great for people who were indoors all day, working from home, and having a pretty empty calendar.
Oh, Clubhouse meeting at 2 PM? Great. I’ll chime in. That sounds a lot easier when there isn't much going on. But now, as the world is opening up, that sounds a bit like a burden. I would rather catch a podcast on my own time than schedule a time to jump on a call.
The popularity in terms of Google search terms and app downloads correlates with reopening after a year of staying inside. People are out with friends more, spending time in their cars committing, and out in public places more often where they won't be able to chime into a clubhouse room.
However, even with these drops, they still have a $4 billion evaluation after raising their series C round.
Clubhouse vs Other Platforms 💬
Big social media companies have formed their own copycat versions of Clubhouse. Twitter has Spaces now, Spotify is launching Greenrooms.
If you're already on those platforms, it's easier to just sign up and try these new features rather than create a new account and start at 0 followers again.
So, while investors are still believing in Clubhouse - I am not sure everyone else is. Do you still use Clubhouse? Did you ever use it?
