Instagram Wants You To Get Off the App

Instagram now wants you to close the app. The head of Instagram announced a new 'Take a Break' feature on the app that users can opt in to.

Take a Break ⏯️

What is the 'Take a Break' feature on Instagram? It is exactly what the name suggests! This new Instagram feature is currently only being tested by 1% of Instagram users. If it is well received, then we should expect it to launch sometime in December or early January.

The feature will remind users to take regular breaks to help you reset! Most apps want to achieve the opposite, in fact, they want their users to stay on their app for longer periods of time. So, the fact that Instagram now wants its' users to close the app is quite unheard of, but also admirable.

In the past, most app features have been geared towards having users stay in the app for longer... IGTVs, Instagram Shopping, and, of course, Reels. The 'Take a Break' feature is the first of its kind.

It's important to take breaks from social media because studies show that spending too much time scrolling can negatively affect your mental health. With this feature, you can set time limits, and prioritize your own self-care with other activities you enjoy that don't require a screen. So many of us spend our entire days looking at a screen for either work, school, or leisure time.

Take a Break vs Screen Time 📱

If you have an iPhone, you might be familiar with "Screen Time" which allows you to set limits for yourself. You're allowed to set a schedule for time away from the screen and set daily limits for apps. We're all guilty of scrolling on Instagram for way too long! However, people either love or hate the "Screen Time" feature on the iPhone.

This feature will help us spend less time on our phone aimlessly refreshing the feed for no reason! Did you know that, on average, Instagram users spend about 53 minutes on the app daily? That number will most definitely fluctuate between every person especially if they work in social media such as influencers or social media managers. However, we should all stay mindful of our time and social media usage when it is not related to work.
